Safer Digital Spaces for Children and Families
Preview edition. This sample issue offers practical, non-alarmist guidance for caregivers, educators, and community leaders.
Digital safety is a relationship practice
Rules and monitoring tools matter, but children are more likely to seek help when adults remain calm, curious, and available. Regular conversations make it easier to discuss uncomfortable online experiences before they become emergencies.
Conversation starters
- What apps or games feel most welcoming to you right now?
- Has anyone online asked you to keep a conversation, image, gift, or relationship secret?
- If something online made you uncomfortable, which adults could help without immediately blaming you?
Review the environment
Check privacy settings together, discuss location sharing, identify how to block and report accounts, and make a family plan for unwanted contact. Avoid demanding evidence or forwarding sensitive images. Preserve only what an appropriate reporting channel requests.
When concern becomes urgent
If a child is in immediate danger, call 911. Suspected online child sexual exploitation can be reported to the CyberTipline. HopeWorks provides prevention education and role-specific training but is not an emergency or investigative service.
